Picking the right roll-off, and getting it down your driveway
Two questions decide every dumpster rental in this city. How heavy is the debris, and can the truck physically reach the spot. Weight picks the size. St. Pete’s brick streets, granite curbs and oak canopy decide the rest.
Weight, not volume, is what costs people money
A roll-off has two limits: how much fits in it, and how much it is allowed to weigh. Almost everyone plans for the first and gets surprised by the second. Our tonnage is baked into the flat price — 2 tons on the 10 yard, 2.5 on the 15, 3 on the 20, 4 on the 30. Past that it is $95 per ton residential, $90 commercial.
Dense debris hits the scale long before the box looks full. Concrete, tile, dirt, plaster, brick and roofing shingles are all weight jobs. If you are tearing off a tile roof or breaking up a driveway, the right answer is often a 10 yard, and it will look half empty when it is done. That is not you wasting money. That is you not paying overage.
Light bulky debris is the opposite. Furniture, drywall, cabinets, fencing, brush and cardboard fill the space and never trouble the scale. That is what the 30 yard is for.
Rough test: if you can pick a piece of it up one-handed, you are buying volume. If it takes two people, you are buying weight. Most renovations are a mix, which is why the 20 yard leaves our yard more than any other size.
One thing about the Sunshine City that quietly costs money
St. Petersburg averages 361 days of sunshine a year and still holds the Guinness record for consecutive sunny days — 768 of them, between 1967 and 1969. It also gets afternoons that dump three inches in an hour. During Milton, Albert Whitted Airport recorded 18.87 inches, and 5.09 of that fell in a single hour.
Rainwater is weight, and weight is billed by the ton. An open container full of drywall, carpet and cardboard can pick up hundreds of pounds sitting through one summer downpour. Tarp the load if weather is coming, or call us and we will pull it before the storm rather than let you pay for rain.
What the truck actually needs
- About 60 feet of straight, reasonably level run to set the box down and to pick it back up.
- About 22 feet for the container itself to sit.
- Roughly 23 to 25 feet of overhead clearance when the hoist arm comes up. This is the one nobody expects.
Overhead is where St. Pete gets interesting. Tree canopy covers 27.2 percent of the city’s land area and the city is pushing for 30. In the older neighborhoods the live oaks arch straight across the street.
We are not going to trim your canopy to make a box fit. Since July 2022 the city protects any shade tree four inches across and up, and a Grand Tree — thirty inches or larger — needs a permit before anyone removes even an eight-inch branch. Penalties run into the thousands of dollars. We bring a smaller container instead. Every time.
The neighborhoods that need a smaller box
Historic Old Northeast. Nearly 3,000 historic buildings, a grid of narrow brick streets, hexblock sidewalks and original granite curbing. The saving grace is the alleys — they were laid out to hide cars and utilities behind the houses, and they are frequently the cleanest drop point in the whole neighborhood. Ask us about the alley before you assume the driveway.
Historic Kenwood. 2,203 historic buildings, most of them put up between 1912 and 1945, and more than half are bungalows. Brick avenues, high granite curbs, oaks over the top. A 10 or a 15 fits. A 30 usually does not.
Roser Park. The city’s first local historic district, designated July 1987. Narrow brick streets running down a genuine grade into the ravine Booker Creek cut, with rusticated block retaining walls along the edge. It is the hardest access in St. Petersburg. We have worked it. Send photos before you book.
Those high granite curbs deserve their own sentence. They are original, they are expensive, and a loaded roll-off truck dragging a wheel across one does real damage that somebody has to pay for. We take those driveways slow and square, and occasionally we will tell you the alley or the street is the only sensible option.
Driveway protection is not a marketing line
Boards go under the rails and under the wheels. Every drop, not just the ones where you are watching.
The median St. Petersburg home was built in 1969, and driveways here are pavers, shell, or sixty-year-old concrete poured over sandy fill with a high water table underneath it. A loaded 20 yard concentrates several tons onto four small contact points. On pavers we would genuinely rather put the container in the alley or on the street than risk the surface.
Driveway or street: what the city actually requires
On your own driveway or your own yard there is no permit and no paperwork. That covers the large majority of the drops we do.
The street is where people get bad information online, so here is the accurate version. St. Petersburg does not have a dedicated dumpster ordinance. What governs a container in the public right-of-way is City Code Sec. 25-2, which makes it unlawful to leave building material in the street once work has stopped, Sec. 25-5 and Sec. 25-6, which require a permit for work in the right-of-way, and Sec. 20-28, which prohibits obstructing a sidewalk. A Right-of-Way Permit from the city’s Engineering & Capital Improvements department may be required depending on the job and the location — (727) 893-7238 or row_permitting@stpete.org.
And one almost nobody knows: under Sec. 25-3, objects sitting in the street between sunset and sunrise have to be marked and illuminated to Florida DOT standards. If your container is staying in the road overnight, that applies to it. We will raise it with you before we place it rather than after somebody complains.
Confirm current requirements with the city before a container goes in the street. Tell us where you want it and we will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
What the city will not take, and why that matters to you
The single most common misunderstanding we hear in St. Petersburg is that you can stack it at the curb and the city will come get it. You cannot, and they will not. Knowing the actual rules tells you whether you need us at all.
There is no routine curbside brush pickup in St. Pete
Garden trash has to go inside the city-issued 90-gallon cart with the lid closed. Limbs thicker than three inches or longer than four feet are not accepted in that cart at all. Anything set beside the cart does not get collected on the regular route.
City code goes further than most people realize: it is unlawful to place garden trash anywhere on the property or in the right-of-way. When the city clears an illegal pile, they bill the owner or occupant for it.
What the city does offer, and exactly where it stops
St. Petersburg runs an on-call special pickup. Request it through SeeClickFix or call Sanitation at (727) 893-7398. A photo speeds it up. These are collected free, with hard caps:

Everything past those caps the city charges for at $25.65 per cubic yard, and that explicitly includes accumulated waste, building materials and brush.
The city also runs five brush drop-off sites, open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week — 1000 62nd Ave NE, 7750 26th Ave N, 2500 26th Ave S, 4015 Dr. MLK St. S, and 2453 20th Ave N. Read the restrictions before you load a trailer: construction-site loads are not permitted, a service working for hire cannot drop unless the resident comes along or signs a city affidavit, and loads from more than one address are prohibited. They also will not take concrete, brick, dirt, roofing material, building materials, furniture, mattresses, electronics, or logs over five feet, thirty-four inches across, or 300 pounds.
Which is the honest reason a renovation, a serious yard overhaul or a whole-house cleanout in this city ends up needing a container. Not because we say so. Because the city’s own rules say so.
The math, without the sales pitch
- Under three cubic yards of furniture and no deadline? Use the city’s free special pickup. Do not pay anybody, including us.
- Bigger than that, but you do not want to touch it? Our junk removal is $50 per cubic yard with a $150 minimum, and we do all the lifting and carry-out.
- Multi-day project, or you have people who can load? A roll-off from $380 flat, sitting on site while you work at your own pace.
- Worth knowing: the city’s own overflow rate is $25.65 per cubic yard, you still do all the loading, and they set the schedule.
Why the housing stock here produces what it does
The median St. Petersburg home was built in 1969. Of roughly 141,000 housing units in the city, about 70 percent went up before 1980, and 22.6 percent in the 1950s alone. Another 9 percent predate 1939.
In practice that means terrazzo floors, jalousie windows, Florida rooms, popcorn ceilings, cast iron drain lines and a great many original kitchens finally reaching the end. It is a city of small older houses being renovated one at a time, which is exactly the debris a roll-off exists for.
It also means most of the housing here predates the 1978 federal lead paint ban. If you are sanding or demolishing in a house from that era, get it tested first. We are not an abatement contractor. We do not haul asbestos, and if we think a job needs testing before anyone touches it, we will say so and stand down.
Pinellas is tight, and you feel it in the driveway
Pinellas is the most densely populated county in Florida — roughly 3,504 people per square mile, more than double Broward in second place at about 1,617. Lots are small, setbacks are short, driveways are shared, and the neighbor’s car is usually already in the way. That density is why we spend so much time on placement instead of just showing up and dropping a box.
Storm season, told accurately
Every hauler in Tampa Bay says they are there after the storm. Here is what actually happened, because the details matter and most people get them wrong.
Helene, late September 2024, drove a record surge into the peninsula. The St. Petersburg gauge measured 6.31 feet above normal high tide.
Milton, three weeks later, did not flood St. Pete with surge. Tampa Bay ran backwards — a blowout tide that pulled water nearly five feet below normal. Milton’s damage here was rain, wind and tornadoes, not water coming in off the bay.
Between the two storms the City of St. Petersburg collected 2.1 million cubic yards of debris, the largest volume in its history. Countywide the figure passed 7.24 million cubic yards.
The most visible casualty sat a few blocks west of downtown. Milton stripped the six-acre fabric roof off Tropicana Field on the night of 9 October 2024 — a dome engineered to take 115 mph winds, on a night Albert Whitted clocked gusts to 101. St. Petersburg ultimately approved just under $60 million to put it back. All 24 panels were replaced with a membrane rated to 165 mph, the last one went on in November 2025, and the Rays played the whole 2025 season at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa before coming home in April 2026. We bring it up because it is the clearest picture anyone has of what a Category 3 does to this peninsula, and of how long the cleanup tail runs after the wind stops.
The city carries 969 repetitive-loss structures, and 756 of them — 78 percent — sit in the east subarea. Shore Acres and Riviera Bay are both named in the city’s own repetitive loss analysis, and St. Petersburg is spending $33 million on Shore Acres drainage.
After a declared storm the city runs its own right-of-way debris collection and it is free. Use it for what it takes. Call us for what it will not: wet drywall coming out of a house, saturated furniture, interior tear-out, garage and attic contents, anything that has to be carried out rather than dragged to the curb.
We did not raise prices after Helene or Milton and we will not after the next one.
Downtown, condo boards and contractors
Downtown St. Petersburg has roughly 9,400 residential units with another 8,050 proposed or under construction. That is a lot of turnovers, renovations and move-outs stacked into towers with loading docks, service elevators and strict rules.
Nearly all of those associations want a certificate of insurance naming them before a truck comes on site. Give us the association or management company when you book and we will send it ahead, usually the same day. What nobody tells you about renting a dumpster in St. Pete
Short version: your own driveway needs no permit, the street does, and a 20-yard will not fit half the driveways north of Central. Here is the rest of what we have learned running this city since 2021.
Your driveway needs no permit. The street does.
If the container sits on your driveway or your own property, there is no paperwork. If it has to sit on a city street or in the right-of-way, St. Petersburg requires a right-of-way permit through the city’s Engineering & Capital Improvements department — (727) 893-7238, row_permitting@stpete.org. Tell us where you want it and we will tell you which situation you are in before we roll out. We would rather lose a job than drop a can somewhere it gets tagged.
Old Northeast driveways are shorter than they look.
A 20-yard box needs roughly 22 feet of straight run to sit on, plus about 60 feet of clearance behind it so the truck can tilt it off. In the 1920s neighborhoods — Old Northeast, Historic Kenwood, Crescent Lake, Roser Park — driveways are frequently 18 feet with a live oak hanging over the whole thing. That is usually a 10 or a 15-yard, or an alley drop off the back. Text a photo of the driveway to 727-240-7033 and we will size it before you pay for something that does not fit.
Where your stuff actually goes.
Most of what we haul goes to the Pinellas County Solid Waste Disposal Complex at 3095 114th Ave N here in St. Petersburg — about twenty minutes up I-275 from downtown, open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 7 to 5 on Saturdays. Metal goes to scrap. Furniture somebody can still use goes to local nonprofits. Appliances with refrigerant get certified recovery, because federal law requires it. The landfill is the last stop, not the first.
What we will not take, and where it belongs.
Paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil and propane are household hazardous waste. Those go to the county’s HHW center at 2855 109th Ave N, open Tuesday through Friday 7 to 5 and the first and third Saturday of the month. We also do not handle medical or biohazard waste, sharps, or asbestos. We are not a mold remediation or pest control company, and we do not do electrical, plumbing, gas or structural work. Knowing the limits is part of the job.
Storm season, honestly.
Shore Acres, Riviera Bay, Venetian Isles and the low spots off Jungle Prada take water first, and we are usually out in them the same week. We do not raise prices after a storm. We will also tell you when not to pay us: after a declared event the city often runs its own debris collection for piles at the right-of-way, and if that is free and fast enough for your situation, take it. Call us for the part the city will not touch — wet drywall, saturated furniture, interior demo, garage contents.
Sometimes the right answer is “do not hire anyone.”
The city will take some of it for nothing, and we will tell you when. St. Petersburg does not run routine curbside brush pickup — what it runs is on-call special pickup. Call Sanitation at 727-893-7398 or file it through SeeClickFix and they will collect up to three cubic yards of furniture, carpet and appliances free, plus small counts of tires, batteries, doors, windows and cabinets. Past those caps the city bills $25.65 per cubic yard. If your pile fits inside the free allowance, take it. We would rather say that out loud than charge a $150 minimum for something you can get for nothing.
Certificates of insurance, before we arrive.
Downtown towers, the Snell Isle condos and most HOA-managed properties want a certificate of insurance naming the association on file before a truck comes on site. Give us the association or management company name when you book a drop-off and we will have it emailed over, usually the same day.

Yes, and they solve different problems. Roll-off dumpster rental is for projects you want to load yourself over several days — remodels, roof tear-offs, long cleanouts. Full-service junk removal means our crew shows up, carries everything out and sweeps the space, usually in a couple of hours. Do you provide full-service junk removal?
Yes. Our crew does the lifting, loading, hauling and basic cleanup, so nothing lands on you. That includes carrying items down stairs, out of attics, garages and storage units, and disassembling bulky pieces when they will not fit through a door. We sweep the area before we leave. Everything usable gets sorted for donation or recycling before the rest is disposed of.
Do you provide driveway protection for dumpster rentals?
Yes. We put down driveway protection under the rails before the container touches the surface, which matters on pavers, stamped concrete and older Florida driveways that crack easily. We also look at overhead tree limbs and power lines before placement. If your driveway will not safely take a roll-off, we will say so and offer full-service junk removal instead.
