Interior Demolition in St. Petersburg, FL

Interior demolition is the selective strip-out of a building’s inside – walls, ceilings, flooring, cabinetry, fixtures, and finishes – while the structure, roof, and exterior stay intact. Elephants Dumpster Rental & Junk Removal performs interior demolition and debris removal for homes, offices, retail spaces, and commercial buildings across St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, and all of Pinellas County.

This is the service contractors call a strip-out or gut. Done properly it hands the next trades a clean, empty shell on schedule. Done badly it damages what was supposed to stay and blows the timeline.

What Interior Demolition Covers

  • Non-load-bearing walls – framing, drywall, and plaster (drywall demolition)
  • Ceilings – drop ceiling grid, tile, and popcorn or textured ceilings
  • All flooring types – carpet, tile, vinyl, laminate, hardwood, and underlayment
  • Kitchens and bathrooms – full tear-outs (kitchen and bathroom demolition)
  • Built-in millwork – cabinetry, shelving, reception desks, and bars
  • Doors, trim, baseboard, and interior windows
  • Commercial fixtures – shelving, partitions, and cubicles
  • Insulation and furring where walls are taken to the stud
  • Complete debris haul-off with sorting for recycling

Clear boundaries. Interior demolition with us does not include removing load-bearing walls, altering structural framing, or touching roof structure – those require a licensed general contractor, engineered drawings, and a permit. We are not licensed for electrical, plumbing, gas, or fire sprinkler work; those systems must be isolated by the appropriate licensed trades first. We also do not perform asbestos or lead abatement. Pre-1981 buildings commonly contain asbestos in floor tile, mastic, ceiling texture, and pipe insulation, and Florida requires licensed abatement before disturbance.

How Interior Demolition Works

1. Scope, Drawings, and Permit Check

We walk the space, mark exactly what comes out and what is protected, and review your plans if a designer or contractor produced them. We confirm which walls are non-structural, whether a demolition permit is needed, and which licensed trades must disconnect systems first. Then you get a flat written quote.

2. Isolation and Protection

Before demo we build containment, mask off areas that remain in service, protect elevators, lobbies, and finished floors, and set up negative air or dust barriers where required. In occupied buildings this is not optional – other tenants keep working while we gut a suite.

3. Top-Down Strip-Out

We work top down: ceilings, then walls, then flooring. Material is sorted as it comes downmetal studs and grid to scrap, clean wood separated, drywall and mixed debris staged apart – because sorted material costs far less to dispose of than one mixed pile.

4. Clean Shell and Documentation

We haul everything off and leave a broom-swept shell ready for framing, electrical rough-in, or inspection. You get photos of the completed strip-out for your file, your lender, or your landlord.

What Interior Demolition Costs

Interior demolition is priced by square footage, scope depth, and access after an on-site walkthrough. A partial strip – flooring and a few walls – is dramatically cheaper than a full gut to bare stud and slab. Commercial spaces with drop ceilings and metal studs often move faster than old residential plaster.

The variables that matter: how deep the strip goes, disposal tonnage (tile and plaster are heavy), building access (freight elevator, dock, stairs, after-hours-only), and whether the building stays occupied, since containment and off-hours work add labor.

Your number includes labor, containment, tools, truck, fuel, dump fees, and recycling. Permit fees, licensed trade disconnects, and any asbestos survey or abatement are third-party costs that we call out separately rather than hiding inside the quote.

For large or phased gut jobs, staging a commercial roll-off dumpster on site can be cheaper than repeated labor mobilizations. We rent those and will tell you which approach genuinely costs less for your project.

Who Books Interior Demolition

General contractors subcontract strip-outs to us so their carpenters and trades stay on productive work. Commercial property managers book gut jobs between tenants to deliver a vanilla shell. Restaurant and retail operators hire us to strip a second-generation space before a build-out. Homeowners doing whole-house renovations use us for full interior gutting. Real estate investors book us immediately after closing on a property that needs to be taken back to studs.

We also handle water and fire damage strip-outs where affected drywall, insulation, and flooring must come out – though we are not a licensed mold remediation firm and will refer that portion to a specialist.

Why Contractors and Owners Use Elephants Dumpster Rental & Junk Removal

We are locally owned and Pinellas-based, so we know the local building departments and commercial property rules. Crews are background-checked, uniformed, and fully insured, with a certificate of insurance issued to your landlord or GC before mobilization. We give flat written pricing, hit the schedule we commit to, protect everything that stays, sort debris for recycling, and refuse work that legally belongs to a licensed trade rather than creating an inspection problem for you later.

Interior Demolition Across St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa and Pinellas County

St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa are the three markets we book the most interior demolition in. If you are anywhere in Pinellas County or across the bay in Hillsborough County, you are inside our normal route.

St. Petersburg, FL

St. Petersburg gets our fastest response on interior demolition simply because we are already here. We cover downtown, the Grand Central District, Historic Roser Park, Bartlett Park, Euclid St. Paul, Meadowlawn and the Gateway corridor. City bulk curbside pickup is free if you can wait for it, and we will tell you when that is the smarter option. Details on our St. Petersburg coverage.

Clearwater, FL

Clearwater is our second-heaviest market. interior demolition runs from Countryside and Morningside out to Island Estates, Sand Key and Clearwater Beach. Beach and island buildings almost always mean elevator reservations, certificates of insurance and loading dock windows — we carry the paperwork and book the elevator before the crew rolls. More on our Clearwater junk removal coverage.

Tampa, FL

We serve Tampa across the bay every week. interior demolition runs through South Tampa, Davis Islands, Beach Park, Virginia Park, Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights, Riverside Heights, Westchase and New Tampa. Tampa sits in Hillsborough County, which runs its own disposal system, so Tampa loads tip at Hillsborough facilities rather than the Pinellas plant — we quote that in up front so the price does not move later. See the full Tampa service page.

The Rest of Pinellas County

Everywhere else in the county gets the same crews and the same pricing. That covers Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar, East Lake, Gulfport, Kenneth City, South Pasadena and Tierra Verde, along with every beach town from St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island up through Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, Redington Shores, North Redington Beach, Indian Shores, Indian Rocks Beach and Clearwater Beach. The Belleair municipalities — Belleair, Belleair Beach, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore — are covered, and on the Hillsborough side so are Westchase and Gandy. The Pinellas County page lists it all.

Not sure whether your address is inside the line? Call 727-240-7033 and ask. We would rather tell you honestly that a job is outside our range than take a deposit and cancel on you.

Interior Demolition Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between interior demolition and full demolition?

Interior demolition strips out the inside of a building while leaving the structure, roof, and exterior walls intact. Full demolition takes the entire building down. Interior work is what contractors call a strip-out or gut, and it is what most renovations require.

Can you remove load-bearing walls?

No. Load-bearing walls require a licensed general contractor, engineered drawings, and a permit. We remove non-load-bearing partitions only. If there is any doubt about whether a wall is structural, we stop and have it verified rather than guessing.

Do I need a permit for an interior gut?

Frequently yes, especially for commercial spaces and anything involving structural, electrical, plumbing, or fire protection systems. Cosmetic tear-out sometimes does not require one. We tell you what your jurisdiction requires during the walkthrough so nothing surprises you at inspection.

Can you work while the building stays occupied?

Yes. We build containment, mask off areas remaining in service, protect elevators and common areas, and can work evenings or weekends. Occupied-building work costs somewhat more because of the containment and off-hours labor, and the quote reflects that honestly.

What about asbestos in an older building?

Pre-1981 buildings commonly contain asbestos in floor tile, mastic, ceiling texture, and pipe insulation, and Florida requires a survey and licensed abatement before disturbance. We do not perform abatement and will not disturb suspect material. Testing first is far cheaper than remediating a contaminated site.

Do you handle water or fire damage strip-outs?

We remove affected drywall, insulation, flooring, and cabinetry. We are not a licensed mold remediation firm, so if mold remediation is required we will tell you and refer that scope to a specialist. We handle the demolition and debris portion.

Is debris removal included?

Yes. Labor, containment, tools, truck, fuel, dump fees, and recycling are all in one flat number. We sort material as it comes down so metal goes to scrap and clean wood is separated, which lowers disposal cost and landfill volume.

How long does a strip-out take?

A single office suite or condo can be one to two days. A full commercial floor or whole-house gut typically runs several days to a couple of weeks depending on square footage and depth of the strip. We commit to a schedule and work to it.

Would a dumpster be cheaper than full-service demolition?

If your own crew is doing the tear-out over several days, a roll-off dumpster is usually cheaper. If you want a turnkey strip-out on a deadline, full service normally costs less overall. We quote both options and tell you which one actually wins.

Do you offer interior demolition in Tampa, FL?

Yes. Tampa is a regular part of our route, not a special trip. We cross the Howard Frankland, Gandy and Courtney Campbell bridges for interior demolition in South Tampa, Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Seminole Heights, Ybor City, Westchase, Carrollwood, Temple Terrace and New Tampa. Tampa is in Hillsborough County, so loads tip at Hillsborough facilities instead of the Pinellas plant. That difference is already in the number we quote you — there is no bridge surcharge bolted on at the end.

How fast can you get to Clearwater for interior demolition?

Clearwater is our second-busiest market, so same-day or next-day is normal. Jobs in Countryside, Skycrest, Morningside and the US-19 corridor are straightforward. Anything on Clearwater Beach, Sand Key or Island Estates we schedule early in the morning, because the Memorial Causeway and beach parking will wreck an afternoon window. If the building needs a certificate of insurance or a reserved service elevator, tell us when you book and we handle it.

Which cities do you serve besides St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa?

All of Pinellas County. Inland that is Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar and East Lake. On the water it is St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Beach, Redington Shores, North Redington Beach, Clearwater Beach and Tierra Verde. We also cover Gulfport, Kenneth City, South Pasadena, Belleair, Belleair Beach, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore, plus Westchase and the Gandy corridor on the Hillsborough side.
