Garage Demolition
Garage demolition takes down detached and attached garages – framing, roof, slab-mounted structure and the shelving or storage inside. Permits and utility disconnects have to be settled before demo day, and a slab comes out separately because concrete is priced by weight rather than volume. Cost works out at $50 per cubic yard of space used, subject to a $150 minimum, and it is quoted flat before the crew begins. Garage Demolition in St. Petersburg, FL
A detached garage that has rotted, flooded, or simply outlived its usefulness takes up the best part of a Florida lot. Elephants Dumpster Rental & Junk Removal handles garage demolition and complete debris removal throughout St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Largo, Seminole, Gulfport, and all of Pinellas County – whether you are clearing space for an addition, an ADU, a pool, or a sale.
We handle both ends of the job: full detached garage teardown and interior garage strip-out where the structure stays but the built-ins, shelving, drywall, and flooring come out.
Garage Demolition Services
- Detached garage teardown – wood frame, block, and metal buildings
- Carports and lean-to structures, including aluminum and steel frames
- Interior strip-out – built-in workbenches, cabinets, shelving, and pegboard
- Garage door and opener removal, springs handled safely
- Drywall, insulation, and ceiling removal (drywall demolition)
- Concrete slab and apron removal when requested (concrete removal)
- Attached storage sheds and side additions
- Contents cleared first – see garage cleanouts
- Metal recovery from doors, framing, and hardware via scrap metal removal
What has to happen before we start. Detached garage demolition in Pinellas County generally requires a demolition permit, and any electrical service, subpanel, water line, or gas line running to the garage must be disconnected and capped by the utility or a licensed trade – we do not perform those disconnects. Structures built before 1981 may contain asbestos in siding, roofing, or floor tile, requiring a licensed survey and abatement. Garages built before 1978 may have lead paint. We will tell you exactly what applies rather than skipping steps that come back on you.
How Garage Demolition Works
1. Site Visit and Honest Scope
We measure the structure, check equipment access from the street or alley, look at the proximity of fences, neighboring houses, and overhead power lines, and identify the slab situation. You get a flat written quote for demolition and haul-off, with permit and utility costs disclosed separately.
2. Clear the Contents
Nothing comes down full. We empty the garage first – tools, boxes, bikes, old paint, and decades of storage. Anything donatable goes to donation; metal goes to scrap. Old paint, solvents, pesticides, and pool chemicals cannot be hauled with regular debris and must go to the Pinellas County household hazardous waste facility; we will point you there.
3. Controlled Teardown
The building comes down in a planned sequence – garage door and hardware, then roof, then walls, then framing. Crews protect fences, driveways, landscaping, septic fields, and neighboring property. Debris is sorted as it falls: metal to recycling, clean wood separated, mixed debris last.
4. Haul Off and Grade
Everything leaves the property. We rake and clear the footprint, remove nails and hardware from the area, and photograph the finished lot for your records or your permit closeout.
What Garage Demolition Costs
Garage demolition is always quoted on site. A small single-car wood-frame garage on an open lot with driveway access is at the low end. A two-car block garage with a slab, an attached carport, and tight rear-alley access is substantially more.
Four things drive the price: size and construction type (block is heavier and slower than wood frame), equipment access, whether the concrete slab is included, and disposal tonnage. Slab removal is often the single biggest line item because concrete is dense and dump fees are weight-based – plenty of owners choose to leave the slab as a future patio or shed pad.
Our quote includes demolition labor, equipment, debris haul-off, dump fees, and recycling. It excludes permit fees, utility disconnects, and asbestos or lead testing and abatement, which are third-party costs we itemize honestly rather than burying.
Metal recovery reduces your bill. Garage doors, tracks, framing, and hardware carry real scrap value that we credit back. Bundling the contents cleanout into the same mobilization is also far cheaper than two separate visits.
Who Books Garage Demolition
Homeowners book us to clear space for an addition, pool, ADU, or larger new garage. Real estate investors and flippers use us to remove a derelict structure that is killing a property’s value or blocking financing. Estate executors call after inheriting a home with a collapsing garage. Property owners facing code enforcement hire us to resolve an unsafe-structure citation. Contractors subcontract the teardown so their crews stay on the build.
We also handle storm-damaged garages and carports, which in Pinellas County is a regular occurrence after hurricane season – see hurricane debris removal for storm cleanup short of demolition.
Why Property Owners Choose Us
We are locally owned and work in these neighborhoods every day, so we understand Pinellas permitting and how close everything sits on a Florida lot. Crews are background-checked, uniformed, and fully insured, and we provide a certificate of insurance to HOAs or property managers when required. You get flat written pricing with third-party costs disclosed, real protection for your fences and landscaping, aggressive recycling instead of landfilling, and straight answers about permits and asbestos.

Garage Demolition in St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa
Our service map has three anchors: St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa. Those three cities absorb most of our garage demolition work, and everything in between them across Pinellas County is covered on the same schedule and the same price list.
St. Petersburg, FL
St. Petersburg is our home city and the shortest drive we make, which is why garage demolition here is the easiest to fit in on short notice. From Snell Isle and Old Northeast down through Historic Kenwood, Greater Woodlawn, Lakewood Estates and the Skyway Marina District, we already know which streets have rear alley access and which ones need a smaller truck. More on our St. Petersburg junk removal coverage.
Clearwater, FL
Clearwater work is a daily thing for us. From the condo towers on Sand Key to the single-family blocks around Countryside and On Top of the World, garage demolition here is usually about access rules more than volume — HOA approval, service elevators, restricted haul hours. We deal with all of it so you do not have to. See the full Clearwater service page.
Tampa, FL
Yes, we cross the bay. Tampa garage demolition is booked the same way everything else is, covering Downtown, Water Street, Harbour Island, Bayshore Beautiful, Seminole Heights, Carrollwood, Westchase and Temple Terrace. Because Tampa is in Hillsborough County, bridge time and a different tipping fee are baked into the quote — there is no surprise bridge surcharge added at the end. Details on our Tampa coverage.
The Rest of Pinellas County
Between and around the big three we cover the whole county. Inland that means Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar and East Lake. On the water we run St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Beach, Redington Shores, North Redington Beach, Clearwater Beach and Tierra Verde. The smaller municipalities count too: Gulfport, Kenneth City, South Pasadena, Belleair, Belleair Beach, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore. On the Tampa side we also work Westchase and the Gandy corridor. Full county detail is on the Pinellas County page.
Not sure whether your address is inside the line? Call 727-240-7033 and ask. We would rather tell you honestly that a job is outside our range than take a deposit and cancel on you.
Garage Demolition Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to demolish a garage?
Generally yes. Detached structure demolition in Pinellas County municipalities typically requires a demolition permit, and utility disconnects usually have to be documented as part of it. We explain exactly what your city or county requires during the walkthrough.
Do you remove the concrete slab too?
We can, but it is quoted separately because concrete is dense and dump fees are weight-based, making slab removal often the largest line item. Many owners choose to keep the slab as a future patio, shed pad, or parking area instead.
Who disconnects the electrical running to the garage?
The utility and a licensed electrician handle it, not us. Any electrical service, subpanel, water line, or gas line feeding the garage must be disconnected and capped before demolition begins. This usually needs scheduling in advance, so start early.
Can you demolish a garage that is very close to my neighbor?
Yes, and it is common on Florida lots. Tight sites take more hand labor and less machine work, which affects the price. We protect neighboring fences, structures, and landscaping and plan the teardown sequence around the constraint.
What if my garage has asbestos or lead paint?
Structures built before 1981 may contain asbestos in siding, roofing, or floor tile, and pre-1978 buildings may have lead paint. Both require licensed testing and abatement before demolition. We do not perform abatement and will not disturb suspect material.
Can you clear out the contents first?
Yes, and doing both in one mobilization is far cheaper than two visits. We empty the garage of tools, boxes, and stored items, donate what we can, and recycle metal before the structure comes down.
What about old paint and chemicals stored in there?
Those cannot go with regular debris. Paint, solvents, pesticides, and pool chemicals must go to the Pinellas County household hazardous waste facility. We will identify them and point you to the right drop-off rather than illegally hauling them.
How long does garage demolition take?
Most single and two-car garages come down in one to two days once permits and utility disconnects are complete. Adding slab removal extends it. The permitting and disconnect phase is usually longer than the demolition itself.
Do you handle interior-only garage strip-outs?
Yes. If the structure is staying, we remove built-in workbenches, cabinets, shelving, pegboard, drywall, insulation, and flooring, then haul it all away. That is a common step before converting a garage into living or workshop space.
Do you offer garage demolition in Tampa, FL?
Yes. Tampa is a regular part of our route, not a special trip. We cross the Howard Frankland, Gandy and Courtney Campbell bridges for garage demolition in South Tampa, Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, Seminole Heights, Ybor City, Westchase, Carrollwood, Temple Terrace and New Tampa. Tampa is in Hillsborough County, so loads tip at Hillsborough facilities instead of the Pinellas plant. That difference is already in the number we quote you — there is no bridge surcharge bolted on at the end.
How fast can you get to Clearwater for garage demolition?
Clearwater is our second-busiest market, so same-day or next-day is normal. Jobs in Countryside, Skycrest, Morningside and the US-19 corridor are straightforward. Anything on Clearwater Beach, Sand Key or Island Estates we schedule early in the morning, because the Memorial Causeway and beach parking will wreck an afternoon window. If the building needs a certificate of insurance or a reserved service elevator, tell us when you book and we handle it.
Which cities do you serve besides St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa?
All of Pinellas County. Inland that is Largo, Pinellas Park, Seminole, Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar and East Lake. On the water it is St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Madeira Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, Indian Shores, Redington Beach, Redington Shores, North Redington Beach, Clearwater Beach and Tierra Verde. We also cover Gulfport, Kenneth City, South Pasadena, Belleair, Belleair Beach, Belleair Bluffs and Belleair Shore, plus Westchase and the Gandy corridor on the Hillsborough side.
